The Princess Theater Torquay

The Princess Theater in Torquay has been a place of family entertainment on Torquay seafront since it first opened on the night of Wednesday the 7th June 1961. On the bill for that opening night were the leading entertainers of the time as well as the great Tommy Cooper there was also the fantastic Morecambe and Wise.

Did you know that… ? The Princess Theatre, the Princess Gardens and the Princess Pier were all officially opened on the night of Wednesday the 7th June 1961.

The theater was built by Torbay Council as part of its complete redevelopment of Princess Gardens and Princess Pier. The theater building replaced a marquee that was erected once a year to provide haytheatre.com somewhere to house a very well liked summer season of light entertainment, which attracted people from all over the country to the area.

The theater has long hosted the country’s leading entertainers and right the way through the seventies and eighties the summer seasons found the likes of Dick Emery, Larry Grayson, Jim Davidson and a lot of others entertaining locals and visitors alike.

Did you know that… ? The Beatles only appearance in Torquay (so far) was on 18th August 1963 the show was at the Princess Theater and attracted hundreds of local people to see them perform their new release “She loves you”.

Today the Princess Theater continues to attract more and more first rate shows. This year the Rocky Horror Show has already visited celebrating its 40 year anniversary. Still to come are shows like Dolly Parton’s musical 9 to 5, Little Voice, and Priscilla Queen of the Desert starring Jason Donovan and many, many more including comedians and musicians.

The theater has also opened its doors to more modern trends and there are numerous one night appearances by stand up comedians such as Jimmy Carr, Milton Jones and Bill Bailey. Tribute acts are also popular and in 2013 these include tributes to Slade and ELO. Classical music and dance shows also feature all the way through the year and in 2013 The Vienna Festival ballet will visit with The Sleeping Beauty and there will be performances of Bizet’s Carmen and Verdi’s Aida.

Did you know that… ? The theater also hosts some of the bigger productions put on by the local amateur operatic and dramatic societies and is also licensed for weddings and civil partnerships.

As you can see the Princess Theater Torquay has been a place of fantastic entertainment for a fair few years and is now more prosperous than ever, constantly growing and expanding and including more acts and shows into its yearly timetable. It has adapted to modern trends and has become a place where no matter who you are, there will be a show or act for you.
